DODGERS, SHAW WORKING ON NEW MULTIYEAR DEAL.

Byline: Matt McHale Daily News Staff Writer

Dodgers closer Jeff Shaw
For the Australian politician, see .
Jeffrey Lee Shaw (born July 7 1966 in Washington Court House, Ohio) is a former Major League Baseball relief pitcher who had a 12-year career from 1990 to 2001.
is expected to demand a trade before the Nov. 5 deadline, even as the club works toward an agreement on a new multiyear contract.

Dodgers general manager Kevin Malone
:Kevin Malone is also the name of a former Los Angeles Dodgers general manager.

Kevin Malone is a fictional character from the US television series, The Office. He is played by Brian Baumgartner.
has spoken to Shaw's Cincinnati-based agent Joe Bick several times in the past few days and both seemed optimistic about reaching a new deal that could be worth almost $4.5 million per season.

Malone flew Wednesday to the Dodgers spring-training camp in Vero Beach Vero Beach (vēr`o), city (1990 pop. 17,350), seat of Indian River co., E Fla., on Indian River (a lagoon and part of the Intracoastal Waterway); founded c.1888, inc. 1919.  for four days of organizational meetings.

Shaw, who had 25 of his 48 saves after being traded from the Reds at the All-Star break, has three years left on his existing deal at $2.8 million.

Texas' John Wetteland
John Karl Wetteland (born July 21 1966 (1966--) (age 41) in San Mateo, California, U.S.
is baseball's highest-paid closer at $5.5 million per season. The Giants' Robb Nen
Robert Allen Nen (born November 28 1969 in San Pedro, California) is a former right-handed relief pitcher in Major League Baseball, who spent most of his career as a closer. He is the son of former major league first baseman Dick Nen.
makes $4.5 million and the Cubs' Rod Beck
Rodney Roy Beck (August 3 1968 – June 23 2007[1]) was an American relief pitcher in Major League Baseball who played for the San Francisco Giants (1991-97), Chicago Cubs (1998-99), Boston Red Sox (1999-2001) and San Diego Padres (2003-2004).
         $4 million.

The demand is more procedural, even though Shaw has said he would like to play closer to his home outside Cincinnati. But in most cases, the contract is renegotiated and the demand is dropped.

A player moved during a multiyear contract can demand to be traded after the first season with the new club. If he is not traded, he can become a free agent March 15.

``In the final analysis, he signed the contract he signed because it was close to their permanent residence,'' Bick said. ``If it was Los Angeles or Seattle or Pittsburgh, I think he certainly would want to be paid his true market value, which he is not.

``This is not a condemnation of Los Angeles, not at all. Jeff enjoyed it there.''
