DODGER BLUE TINTS OTHERS IN OCTOBER.

Byline: STEVE DILBECK

Is it painful?

Ah, but you know. All this talk about the Dodgers not having been to the playoffs in seven years. Silly, huh?

The Dodgers haven't won a postseason game since 1988?

Come on, it's October and Dodgers are winning games all across the country.

Did you see Eric Karros

Those are all Dodgers. All ex-Dodgers, of course.

It's become a hot ticket to the postseason. The team that can't find its way back to the playoffs is specializing in helping others reach October.

There are a staggering 13 former Dodgers involved in the playoffs. Every time you turn on the TV, they multiply like rabbits.

The Cubs have Karros, Grudzielanek and Goodwin. The Giants have Marquis Grissom
Marquis Deon Grissom, nicknamed "Grip" (born 17 April 1967) is a former Major League Baseball player. He excelled in baseball at Lakeshore High School, under the tutelage of baseball coach Mike Juenger.
, Matt Herges Matthew Tyler Herges (born April 1, 1970, in Champaign, Illinois) is a Major League Baseball pitcher. He is an alumnus of Illinois State University.

Signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1992, Herges would make his Major League Baseball debut with

Twins, who are Dodgerless. They just haven't caught on to a good thing.

The ex-Dodgers could put together a decent starting playoff team. Let's see, how would most teams fair against this lineup:

Grissom (OF), Grudzielanek (2B), Sheffield (SS, original position), Karros (1B), Garcia (OF), Hollandsworth (OF), Harris (3B), Melhuse (C) and Martinez (SP).

That leaves Lilly, Herges and Rodriguez in the bullpen, Goodwin to pinch run.

Dodgers general manager Dan Evans, who is responsible for moving a half-dozen of the 13, said he's watched just about every pitch of the playoffs and did notice there were a few ex-Dodgers.

Evans said it's the way of the baseball world these days; players are more transient than 20 years ago.

``A guy who is not a real good fit for whatever reason on your club, if he goes and fits somewhere else, that's fine,'' Evans said. ``He just didn't fit for you. I don't think you make decisions based on what he may do for his future club.

``Sometimes guys pop up on rosters. It doesn't mean you made the right or wrong decision. It just means what happened to them worked out for them. If you worry about what happens with the other clubs, you'll never make a deal.''

A willingness to make a deal has not been a Dodgers problem. Only if it's not irksome enough to watch ex-Boys in Blue succeed elsewhere, there's what the club received in return for this group.

For Karros and Grudzielanek, there is Todd Hundley. He hit more than .211 once in his previous four seasons and seemed to constantly battle injury. Anyone stunned when it happened again here?

For this, he was paid $6.5 million. And he has one year left on his deal for another $6.5 million. Also coming in the deal, outfielder Chad Hermansen (career average: .200), who spent most of the season in the minors.

For MVP-candidate Sheffield the Dodgers received left-hander Odalis Perez and Brian Jordan, soon to become a free agent and last seen actually in a Dodgers uniform sometime around Easter.

In return for Herges, it was reliever Guillermo Mota and Wilkin Ruan, but that about ends it.

``I like that deal,'' Evans said.

Evans said there are players from almost every club playing for the eight teams in the playoffs, and although that might be true to an extent, I don't see a lot of ex-Angels out there. J.T. Snow?

Evans said he's more concerned that when the team set its 25-man roster at the end of August, it did not boast a single Dodger drafted in the first or second round.

``That bothers me a heck of a lot more than who I'm watching on TV in October,'' he said.

That's a good thing because former Dodgers are everywhere. When you can't produce a winner yourself, at least you can help someone else.

``My biggest disappointment is there aren't 25 current Dodgers still playing,'' Evans said.

        Well, there is that.
