DOCUMENTUM Announces New DocSolution for Engineering Change Notices; DOCUMENTUM delivers fast track solution for semiconductor industry.

PLEASANTON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 21, 1997-- DOCUMENTUM(R) Inc. (NASDAQ:DCTM), the leader in delivering document management solutions for client/server and Web environments, today announced its third DocSolution from DOCUMENTUM's Industry Solutions Group.

The DocSolution for ECNs (Engineering Change Notices) was created for semiconductor manufacturers to improve fabrication plant performance and production. The combination of the DOCUMENTUM Enterprise Document Management System(TM)(EDMS) and the DocSolution for ECNs provides a "best practices" framework with consulting and training services.

Using an intranet, the DocSolution guarantees swift and cost-effective delivery of the most current specifications, procedures and recipes to the plant floor. DocSolution for ECNs was developed by DOCUMENTUM and Workgroup Management (WMI), a systems integrator specializing in document management technologies for the semiconductor and electronics industries. In a separate announcement made earlier this month, DOCUMENTUM announced the intent to acquire WMI later this year.

Improving the semiconductor fabrication process

To maximize the throughput and yield, and keep pace with new technologies, semiconductor manufacturers are constantly modifying and changing their production processes. A typical wafer fabrication plant or "fab" may implement 5,000 or more changes per year, according to leading semiconductor companies. Today, change notices are circulated manually, which may take 30 or more days for approval.

Within the DocSolution for ECN management system, documents are checked out from the DOCUMENTUM EDMS repository, attached to an electronic ECN and then routed for review and approval online. Once the change notice is approved, updated documents are instantly accessible through an intuitive Web interface.

Providing operators with global, online access to the most current documents ensures the latest processes are employed worldwide and that errors are minimized, therefore improving yield. The DOCUMENTUM system can also meet requirements of quality audits by producing a record of which documents are used at various times in the production cycle.
