The procedure combines the use of X-rays and an endoscope, a long, flexible, lighted tube with a video camera at the tip. The endoscope is inserted through the patient's mouth, allowing the physician to view the inside of the stomach and duodenum.

The endoscope also allows for dyes to be injected in the bile ducts and pancreas so they are viewable on X-rays.
