DNAP AND DU PONT CANOLA JOINT VENTURE
SUPPLIES IMPROVED VARIETY OF CANOLA OIL
CINNAMINSON, N.J., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- DNA Plant Technology Corporation (NASDAQ: DNAP) announced today that InterMountain Canola Company, its joint venture with Du Pont (NYSE: DD), has entered into an agreement to supply an improved canola oil to Eagle Snacks Inc., one of the Anheuser Busch Companies.
In the first phase of this agreement, which has already commenced, Eagle Snacks is using InterMountain's Clear Valley brand canola oil to make potato chips which are now in regional distribution.
InterMountain's Clear Valley brand canola oil has only 6 percent saturated fat, the lowest of any edible oil available today. Most importantly, unlike other canola oils that are not suitable for frying, the Clear Valley brand is highly heat stable. Thus, for the first time it is possible to produce potato chips and other snack foods with a healthy oil, while insuring the taste and crispness consumers are seeking. Lack of heat stability in canola tends to result in off odors and flavors.
Following six years of collaborative research between DNAP and Du Pont applying new breeding techniques of biotechnology for the development of improved varieties of canola, InterMountain Canola was formed in 1991. By developing a new variety of canola which can yield oil with enhanced heat stability, InterMountain has enabled the use of this healthy oil in processed foods, opening up a vast new market opportunity. This market is estimated to exceed 10 billion pounds of oil in the United States, equivalent to more than $3 billion annually. InterMountain Canola is headquartered in Cinnaminson.
InterMountain is also developing and field testing other varieties of canola which will be even lower in saturated fat and higher in monounsaturated fatty acids, which medical research suggests may improve the cholesterol profile. InterMountain Canola develops improved seed varieties, contract grows the new canola varieties, contracts for the processing of the harvested canola seed and then markets the oil to food processors. In 1991, InterMountain Canola contracted for approximately 26,000 acres in the Pacific Northwest for the growing of commercial quantities of canola varieties, making it the largest domestic producer of special varieties of canola oil.
DNAP is a leading agricultural biotechnology company, applying a spectrum of technologies to develop and commercialize plant-based products, agricultural and environmental diagnostics, and ice modification products and processes for industrial and consumer markets. The company has four operating joint ventures -- FreshWorld, InterMountain Canola Company, Agri-Diagnostics Associates, and Florigene, B.V.
