DNA tests hope as Kirsty police fly out.

BRITISH police brought in to help find the killer of Welsh backpacker Kirsty Jones are heading back to Thailand amid speculation there has been a major breakthrough.

Two Dyfed Powys detectives will fly out to Chiang Mai Chiang Mai (jyäng` mī`) or Chiengmai (jyĕng`–), city (1990 pop. 164,902), capital of Chiang Mai prov., N Thailand, on the Ping River, near the Myanmar border.  today to present Thai police with the results of a series of forensic and DNA tests DNA test nDNS-Test m .

Hopes are rising that new evidence discovered as a result of tests carried out in Britain will allow police in Thailand to make an arrest.

Superintendent Steve Wilkins and Detective Inspector Steve Hughson were already on the way to London yesterday to prepare for an early flight out to Thailand this morning.

A Foreign Office spokesman described the detectives' visit as a "very important stage in the investigation".

He said: "Our overwhelming priority remains to achieve a positive outcome from what has been very good police to police co-operation. "The two detectives travelling out to Thailand are going to have a series of very important meetings during the next week. "It is true to say that this is a very important stage in the investigation."

Miss Jones, a 23-year-old graduate from the village of Tredomen, near Brecon, was found dead in Aree hostel in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on August 10, 2000.

In the past, hopes have been raised over the case, but have then proved groundless.

Thai police chiefs were criticised for unprofessional conduct after allowing TV cameras into the crime scene before it was fully examined.

They then raised hopes by predicting they would quickly arrest the killer.

They eventually arrested and charged the British owner of the guesthouse, who discovered Miss Jones's body.

He was arrested immediately after the murder and charged with passport irregularities because his visa for Thailand was two years out of date.

But all charges against Mr Gill were dropped at the end of November last year, and he returned to live in Britain.
