DMTF announces DMI 2.0 for complete manageability; Updated Desktop Management Standard unveiled at DMTF annual conference.

ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 11, 1996--The Desktop Management Task Force (DMTF (Distributed Management Task Force, Inc., Portland, OR, www.dmtf.org) An industry consortium founded in 1992 that is involved with the development, support and maintenance of management standards for PCs. Its goal is to reduce the cost and complexity of PC management. ) is announcing today version 2.0 of the Desktop Management Interface (DMI (Desktop Management Interface) The first desktop management standard from the DMTF. Enabling PCs to be monitored from a central console, it was superseded by the DMTF's Common Information Model (see CIM). ) specification, the industry standard for desktop systems and server management.

The announcement is being made in conjunction with the DMTF Annual Conference in Orlando this week.

The DMI is an operating system operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
and protocol independent common framework for managing desktop systems and servers, and allows vendors to build interoperable manageability into their products. DMI 2.0, which will be publicly available April 2, includes additions and enhancements to the original specification that was completed in April 1994.

New features include a remote management solution that provides access to DMI information across the network, and a more sophisticated Event Model for monitoring system alerts and indications, as well as other minor enhancements and updates to the DMI specification.

Remote Solution: RPCs

---------------------

The remote management solution that is included in DMI 2.0 is based on the inclusion of a procedural interface, in place of the block interface that was originally included in the DMI's Management Interface (MI). The procedural interface allows for industry standard RPCs (Remote Procedure Calls) to be used by management applications to retrieve DMI information remotely across a network.

DMI 2.0 specifies the use of at least one of three RPCs (DCE (1) (Distributed Computing Environment) Software from The Open Group that allows applications to be built across heterogeneous platforms in a network. DCE includes security, directory naming, time synchronization, file sharing, RPCs and multithreading services. , ONC (Open Network Computing) A family of networking products from Sun for implementing distributed computing in a multivendor environment. Includes TCP/IP and OSI protocols, NFS distributed file system, NIS naming service and TI-RPC remote procedure call library.  and TI RPC (Remote Procedure Call) A programming interface that allows one program to use the services of another program in a remote machine. The calling program sends a message and data to the remote program, which is executed, and results are passed back to the calling ) which are used in operating systems from Apple, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , Microsoft, Novell, SCO (The SCO Group, Lindon, UT, www.sco.com) A leading vendor of Unix operating systems for the x86 platform. SCO had also offered Linux, but abandoned the line in the spring of 2003. The SCO Group is the combination of two companies: Utah-based Caldera, Inc.  and Sun.

Event Model

-----------

The DMI standard includes an Event Model that allows indications or alerts from various system components to be sent to a management application to alert the user that there has been a change or there is a problem with the component.

DMI 2.0 has an enhanced Event Model that filters and categorizes system indications, providing the management application with a higher level of intelligence about the change in a component's operating status.

"The DMTF has always been sensitive to the market requirements for desktop management, and the enhancements that have been made in DMI 2.0 reflect the input we've received from vendors and users about how they want to implement and utilize the DMI," said Ed Arrington, DMTF chairman.

"DMI 2.0 is a functionally complete management framework for desktop and server management. With across-the-board industry support for DMI, momentum for DMTF standards will create real solutions for end users this year."

DMTF Annual Conference

----------------------

The DMTF is holding its Annual Conference March 11-13 in Orlando to discuss the key DMTF directions and activities in 1996 and provide its members with an update on the progress of the DMI. Cheryl Currid, president of Currid & Co. and a leading industry analyst, will present a keynote speech to kick-off the conference.

In addition to general information sessions, the annual conference will include technical seminars on topics related to the new DMI 2.0 specification as well as vendor presentations regarding specific product support for DMTF standards.

A DMI Product Showcase will also be held at the conference, where various DMTF member companies including Acer, AST (AST Computer, Irvine, CA) A PC manufacturer founded in 1980 by Albert Wong, Safi Quershey and Tom Yuen (A, S and T). It offered a complete line of PCs that sold through its dealer channel. , Compaq, Crystal Semiconductor, Digital Equipment Corp., Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.
, NuCom, Phoenix Technology, Radish radish, herbaceous plant (Raphanus sativus) belonging to the family Cruciferae (mustard family), with an edible, pungent root sliced in salads or used as a relish. , Siemens-Nixdorf and Symantec will demonstrate the latest DMI product and technology implementations. The DMTF will also conduct DMI product certification and interoperability testing for those vendors who have recently completed DMI-enabled products.

About the DMTF

--------------

The DMTF, a cooperative industry-wide effort, is providing the enabling technology that allows a standard framework of intelligence and manageability to be built into desktop PC and server products and systems, both networked and standalone.

The DMTF is led by a Steering Committee that includes Compaq Computer Corp., Dell Computer Corp., Digital Equipment Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM Corp., Intel Corp., Microsoft Corp., NEC Technology Corp., Novell Inc., Santa Cruz Operation See SCO.

Santa Cruz Operation - (SCO) A supplier of Unix systems for Intel microprocessors. They supply Xenix and Open Desktop.

Founded in 1979, SCO became a public company in May, 1993 and trades on the Nasdaq National Market System under the symbol SCOC.
, SunSoft Inc. and Symantec Corp.

The DMTF currently has 122 formal members; companies interested in joining the DMTF or obtaining more information about the DMTF, DMI technology and the activities of the DMTF Working Committees, may call 503/264-9300 or view the DMTF Website at http://www.dmtf.org.
