Data, Inc.'s new tape storage and automation solutions are built around DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line. 1 technology, marking the next step in its corporate strategy to supply entry-level to enterprise solutions. Overland Data unveiled a standalone stand·a·lone adj. The DLT1-based products bring Overland customers additions to the company's DLT-based solutions and leverage the value of the DLT1 format to open up the robustness and reliability of DLT technology to customers. It is backward read-compatible with DLT4000, offering a growth path for current DLT4000 customers. Based on technology licensed from Quantum Corporation, the Benchmark DLT1 tape drive offers a 40GB native capacity (80GB compressed) and a 3MB/sec native transfer rate (6MB/sec compressed), providing enterprise reliability and performance at entry-level pricing. With the growth in entry-level server disk capacity, users can now move into DLT technology. "The addition of DLT1 technology to the Overland product line fulfills our mission to deliver entry-level to enterprise storage solutions," said Steve Richardson, vice president of marketing at Overland Data, Inc. "Customers now have the freedom to choose the DLT platform for entry-level server and workstation applications without the price barriers of the past. These customers can deploy DLT-based tape products and operate with a single, compatible tape platform strategy and, for storage automation, they can now take advantage of Overland's robotics robotics, science and technology of general purpose, programmable machine systems. Contrary to the popular fiction image of robots as ambulatory machines of human appearance capable of performing almost any task, most robotic systems are anchored to fixed positions technology." |
