DLJ selects StrataCom's IGX to build advanced ATM enterprise network; ATM brings desktop multimedia and videoconferencing to traders and support personnel, improves availability, performance for Bursty, client server applications.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 1995--To improve operational efficiencies, lower network costs and create a reliable, multiservice network infrastructure, Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette (DLJ) Securities has selected StrataCom's ATM switches for its new metropolitan area network (MAN).

DLJ has already deployed StrataCom IGX switches in three sites as part of the overall network upgrade.

The IGX switches are being used to interconnect the firm's Manhattan corporate headquarters, Jersey City data center and a new operations facility, also located in Jersey City. The new network will also enable DLJ to more easily extend the use of ATM throughout its worldwide WAN, which includes 20 domestic and international offices, in early 1997.

Supporting more than two thousand professionals in the securities industry, the new IGX network will carry both legacy and ATM traffic, handling the majority of DLJ's corporate applications, such as live market data feeds, as well as various stock portfolio and risk management applications. Additionally, the new network will enable DLJ to provide videoconferencing capabilities and emerging multimedia applications, which were not supported with the previous TDM (time division multiplexing) -based network.

Platform Criteria

Key to the selection of StrataCom's IGX platform was its support for both narrowband legacy traffic and ATM; the company's demonstrated ability to provide reliable and secure carrier class ATM solutions; and sophisticated and mature network management software, including StrataSphere BILLder, a usage-based billing application for ATM which provides DLJ with accurate information for charge backs within the corporation.

With the new IGX ATM infrastructure, DLJ will be able to more effectively meet emerging network demands for higher speed and bursty client/server applications Additionally, the IGX ATM platform will enable DLJ to:

-- improve its bandwidth utilization between 30 to 50 percent by expanding capacity and eliminating overburdened segments of the network;

-- simplify network management by implementing one integrated management system;

-- eliminate single points of failure by increasing network resiliency;

-- consolidate multiple traffic types on the same network; and

-- decrease complexity by minimizing the number of components in the network.

ATM: A Strategic Investment

Having implemented ATM within its local area network (LAN), DLJ understood the cost and speed benefits they could achieve by implementing ATM throughout the corporate network and has projected a payback cycle of less than three years for equipment costs for the new network.
