DIVISION V CHAMPIONSHIP: PARACLETE FALLS IN TITLE GAME O. LUTHERAN 4, PARACLETE 0.

Byline: Jack Pollon Staff Writer

IRVINE - Behind a complete-game four-hit shutout by Lauren Miklos, Orange Lutheran defeated Paraclete of Lancaster 4-0 on Saturday to win the Southern Section Division V championship at Barber Memorial Park, the Spirits' seventh softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  championship loss since 1981.

Forrest and Catherine Buttrey each doubled, but Paraclete never advanced a runner past second base and never had more than one runner on the basepaths at a time.

Gonzales, a junior who entered the game with 20 shutouts, six no-hitters, a 5-0 record against teams from the Division II Golden League and a 1-0 victory over Valencia, gave up seven hits. She walked only one batter but got no help from her defense - the Spirits committed six errors and made several mental mistakes.

In addition to giving up only two singles and two doubles, Miklos did not walk a batter and had four strikeouts. Orange Lutheran spread the hitting throughout the lineup, with seven different batters getting hits.
