 - A month away from Christmas, the Westlake High football team nonetheless knows how to appreciate a gift.

Transforming a generous variety of Righetti turnovers into 21 first-half points, Westlake took a 28-7 Southern Section Division IV quarterfinal quar·ter·fi·nal

The first Westlake score came on a bit of offensive razzle-dazzle with 2:35 left in the first quarter as junior Kenneth Mackins took the snap on a fake punt and took off around right end while the rest of the team went left.

``As I turned upfield, I saw open space,'' said Mackins, who went 44 yards for the score, leaping over a final defender near the Righetti 15. ``I saw a last guy and I said `jump' and somehow I landed on my feet.''

The Warriors scored twice more in the quarter on Righetti gifts. A fumbled kickoff recovered on the Righetti 20 was quickly converted on a 14-yard scoring pass from quarterback Todd Feiereisen (10 of 19, 136 yards, two touchdowns) to tailback tail·back

Westlake scored again in the second quarter with running back Kasey O'Brien capping a 70-yard drive with a 7-yard scoring run.

Contos had 72 yards on 21 carries for Westlake.
