DIVISION III: N.D.: NO DICE TOP SEED OVERWHELMS BURROUGHS NOTRE DAME 31, BURROUGHS 3.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

If Phil Beckman switched uniforms it could have been an interesting game.

It's not a such far-fetched notion: The Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  High of Sherman Oaks quarterback's brother, Randy, is a graduate of Burroughs High of Burbank.

But, alas, Beckman is a Knight and visiting Burroughs had no chance in a 31-3 Notre Dame victory Friday in the first round of the Division III

 playoffs.

Notre Dame (10-0) outscored opponents 559-53 in the regular season on the way to a perfect record. Only once did the Knights allowed more than 10 points.

Notre Dame moves on to play at Palmdale in the second round Friday. The Falcons were 21-13 winners over Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities. .

The scary part about Friday's game is Notre Dame didn't play that well. The score might indicate otherwise, but Burroughs, which barely made the playoffs, never was outclassed out·class

said. ``They have a good young team. We will need to play better to win in the second round.''

Burroughs (4-6) had not made the playoffs since 1996.

The Indians took an early lead following a trick play. Burroughs faked a punt from its own 22, and backup quarterback Lee Pettit found T.J. McDonald for a 15-yard gain and a first down. The Indians went 15 plays and took up nearly eight minutes, getting three points on J.B. Myer's 24-yard field goal.

for future Burroughs teams,'' said running back Michael Perez, a senior who had 43 yards on 14 carries.

Once Notre Dame got the ball on offense, the Knights controlled the game. They scored on all four possessions of the first half to take a 24-3 lead.

Beckman hit receiver Brett Hayes on a short slant pattern that Hayes broke through the middle for a 47-yard touchdown and all the points Notre Dame's stingy stin·gy

Notre Dame had trouble moving the ball in the second half. The Knights had 186 of their 293 total yards in the first half.

But the defense came to the rescue as usual. It especially was tough on Perez, who had 46 yards in the first half and minus-3 in the second. Burroughs finished with 181 total yards.

``One yard isn't satisfactory to our team,'' defensive lineman Tim Volk said. ``But as the game goes on, it's going to get tougher to move on us.''
