It takes a team such as Bishop Montgomery of Torrance to bring out the best in Harvard-Westlake, and the Wolverines were in peak form Saturday in a 15-6, 15-6, 17-15 victory in the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Harvard-Westlake will host St. Joseph of Lakewood in Tuesday's Southern California final.

The Wolverines were led by their three senior starters, outside hitter Karalyn Kuchenbecker (22 kills) and middle blockers Courtney Schultz (19 kills) and Terbrie Taylor (18 kills). Junior setter setter: see sporting dog.

``They really tested us,'' Kuchenbecker said. ``It's definitely harder to play a team that's not as good as you are, but Bishop Montgomery does a lot of things really well.''

The Knights (20-8) took a stunning 9-1 lead in the third game, but instead of rolling over and waiting to close out the match in the fourth game, the Wolverines fought back and slowly closed the gap.

Schultz served four consecutive points to cut the deficit to 9-7 and the Wolverines then tied the match at 9 and 10.

A Schultz block gave the Wolverines their first lead of the game at 11-10, but the Knights scored the next four points to put the teams on the verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer. But a Bishop Montgomery double hit and kills by Kuchenbecker and Taylor quickly tied the game at 14. The teams then exchanged ace serves, and the Wolverines closed out the match on kills by Kuchenbecker and Taylor.

``We practiced hard on defense all week, and they really played it well in the third game,'' Harvard-Westlake coach Jess jesse, jess

``It's to be expected, but we really reacted well as a unit, and there was no panic.''

The Wolverines now have beaten the Knights, their main division rival for much of the past decade, five consecutive times after a stretch in the mid-1990s during which the Knights seemed to have an advantage in the rivalry.

``It's much different now, and it helps that they lost Katie Olsovsky and Terri Zartman,'' Kuchenbecker said, referring to two former Bishop Montgomery standouts. ``It's a whole different mentality men·tal·i·ty

The scores might indicate Harvard-Westlake routs in the first two games, but the Knights played the Wolverines far tougher than any of Harvard- Westlake's previous playoff play·off also play-off

Harvard Westlake scored four of the first five points in the first game, but the Knights quickly closed to 5-4.

The Wolverines took over from there, however, as Kuchenbecker recorded kills on three out of four serves at one point and her team opened an 11-4 lead.
