CAMARILLO Camarillo (kă'mərē`yō), city (1990 pop. 52,303), Ventura co., S Calif.; inc. 1964. It is the center of a fertile farm area where citrus fruits and flowers are grown.  - Having lost in the first round of the Southern Section boys' volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. An upright net, 3 ft (or 1 m) high, the top of which stands 8 ft (2.43 m) from the ground for men, 7 ft 4 1/8 in (2.  playoffs the previous three years and losing the first-game to Canyon on Friday night, Camarillo High School co-coach Rob Vandermay had that here-we-go-again look.

So before Game 2, Vandermay and co-coach Ernest Rittenhour decided to take a new approach. They left the gym.

``I took them outside and said, `let's start again,' '' said Vandermay.

The fresh start worked as Camarillo rallied to defeat visiting Canyon of Canyon Country 7-15, 15-8, 15-5, 16-14 to advance to the second round of the Division II playoffs Tuesday against Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. .

``(Canyon) seemed to pass everything on target (in Game 1) and they worked the middle real well,'' said Vandermay.

And that's what Canyon had to do to win, but they couldn't keep it going and didn't challenge in the next two games.

``(Camarillo) was not playing well in the first game,'' said Canyon coach Dave Guttierez. ``They probably hadn't seen a team that could compete with them in a while. Probably never saw a team with a middle attack as strong as ours, or one that jump sets. I'm sure it was a bit of an adjustment for them.''

Camarillo went undefeated, losing just one game, in winning the weak Pacific View League, while Canyon was third in the tough Foothill League behind champion Valencia and Saugus.

And it looked as if the Scorpions where in Pacific View-mode in Game 1 as Canyon converted easy serves into sideouts and rode its middle attack to the easy victory.

In Game 2, Camarillo started doing a better job of moving the ball around. The Scorpions were predictable in their serving in Game 1 and Canyon was able to get solid passes to its setter setter: see sporting dog.

Any of three breeds derived from a medieval hunting dog that would set (lie down) when it found birds so that it and the birds could be covered with a net. Setters have long hair on the ears, chest, legs, and tail.
. But the rest of the match, Camarillo mixed up the serves, hitting deep spots, then going short and then working the lines. That kept Canyon off balance enough that it wasn't able to run its offense as smoothly as in Game 1.

``Our game is the middle attack,'' Guttierez said. ``We live and die on the pass. We just didn't pass well in the second and third games.''

Camarillo looked as if it would easily put the match away in Game 4, taking a 6-1 lead. But Canyon rallied taking an 8-7 lead before committing two net violations and a hitting error to give the Scorpions a 10-8 advantage.

Canyon rallied again, scoring six of the next seven points when Camarillo kept setting the left side. Canyon stuffed three Camarillo spikes spikes

for points during the run that gave them a 14-11 lead.

Canyon served to send the match to a fifth game three times. But a hitting error, a kill down the right side by John Ballard John Ballard (d. 20 September, 1586) was an English Jesuit priest who was famed for being involved in an attempt to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I of England.

Ballard was educated at Caius College, Cambridge and at the English College at Rheims.
and a kill off the block on the left side by sophomore Eric Vance kept Camarillo in the game and closed the game to 14-13.

The Scorpions then put the match away behind the setting of Mazi Sarahang. Vance got a kill by Vance off the left-side block and kills by Michael Power The name Michael Power may refer to:

on the right side and in the middle for the match winner.

``Mazi moved the ball around well,'' said Rittenhour. ``If Mazi doesn't distribute the ball well, they get a lot more blocks.''

The proof was in the stats as Nick Grahek led Camarillo with 23 kills, but Vance had 11, John Ballard had 10 and Ryan Hart added nine.
