Royal, hoping to reach the finals for the eighth time, finished the season 26-1. The Highlanders also received 24 kills from senior outside hitter Ryan Moberly and 22 kills from senior opposite Bryan Reinstein. ``We never got it going to where we could run a consistent offense,'' said Royal coach Bob Ferguson. ``It was Corona del Mar's digging. They read the sets well and we were going against two blockers the whole night. ``We didn't block them too many times either and that was a big factor. I had eight seniors and we were hoping to be in the final. I'm disappointed for them.'' The mistakes and inconsistent play by Royal began in the third game. The Highlanders watched Corona del Mar take a 9-5 lead, and the Sea Kings extended their margin to 12-5 when Jason McDaniel hit the ball into the net. The closest Royal came to the deficit was 12-7 when senior middle blocker Morgan Jackson made a bad pass. From there, Corona del Mar scored two straight, and after two sideouts, the Sea Kings closed Game 3 when Royal was called for four hits, 15-7. Just as in the previous game, Corona del Mar was able to get out to a somewhat comfortable margin. The Sea Kings led 6-5 and scored three straight points - two off Dickson's kills that were wide and another when Dickson was called for a lift, 9-5. Corona del Mar couldn't shake off Royal, which kept within striking distance, never trailing by more than four points.
