DIVERSITY IS IN; DEMAND RISES FOR MINORITY INTERNS
ST. LOUIS, June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- National demand for minority

college interns increased 10.7 percent over last year, it was reported today by INROADS, Inc., a St. Louis-based career development organization for talented minorities.
U.S. companies are offering a record 1,862 INROADS internships this year, compared to 1,682 in 1991.
Demand favors business majors by 3 to 1; slightly more than a quarter are engineering and science internships.
One-third of the business internships are for students in general business, one-fifth require accounting majors, and another fifth specify banking or finance.
Highest technical demand is for computer science and "double E" -- electrical and electronic -- engineering majors. Chemical and mechanical are second and third.
More than 5,000 college students will fill corporate internships this year through 39 INROADS affiliates across the country.
INROADS prepares talented Hispanics, blacks, and Native American Indians for leadership in corporate America and the community. INROADS recruits three to four eligible candidates for each slot available; participating companies select students for internships. Interns receive up to four summers of work experience along with year-round training.
NOTE: Figures for available internships include slots to replace graduating seniors and students who have dropped out.
