made their last trip to the bottom of the ocean to retrieve the wreckage of TWA TWA Time-weighted average, see there  Flight 800 on Saturday, ending 15 weeks of a painstaking search that has yet to reveal a cause.

Divers made more than 3,800 trips to the ocean floor, pausing only for hurricanes and tall waves, since the jumbo jet exploded over the Atlantic Ocean Atlantic Ocean [Lat.,=of Atlas], second largest ocean (c.31,800,000 sq mi/82,362,000 sq km; c.36,000,000 sq mi/93,240,000 sq km with marginal seas). In an emotional ceremony marking the end of their work, dozens of divers Saturday placed a wreath and carnations in the ocean in memory of the 230 victims.

``We'll go back to work. We'll go back to our other cases. But it will never go away completely,'' said Michael Tyms, an FBI diver.

``I leave with a little sense of disappointment, not being able to say we have an answer,'' Tyms said. ``It's kind of an empty feeling.''

The Navy said Saturday that 98 percent of the plane and 214 bodies had been retrieved. Searchers will now use scallop scallop or pecten, marine bivalve mollusk. Like its close relative the oyster, the scallop has no siphons, the mantle being completely open, but it differs from other mollusks in that both mantle edges have a row of steely blue "eyes" and  nets to dredge the ocean floor in an attempt to recover the remaining 2 percent of the plane.

Friday, James Kallstrom, assistant director of the FBI, sought to dispel rumors that investigators are covering up the cause of the crash or that they were waiting to reveal the cause until after Tuesday's presidential election.

Kallstrom insisted the rumors were false, saying it saddened him to hear that people believe them.

Several divers stood on the dock of a Coast Guard station, trying to stay warm on a cool autumn afternoon, far removed from the hot days of summer when their search began. Still, investigators have not been able to determine whether a bomb, missile or mechanical malfunction mal·func·tion

The memories of their ordeal repeatedly focused on the victims who had just departed Kennedy Airport bound for Paris when an explosion ripped their Boeing 747 apart.

``It really hits you when you see underwear or socks or something scattered on the bottom,'' Tyms said. ``That's when you start thinking there were human beings involved here.''
