VOD will be delivered to NTL digital cable set-top boxes The cable TV box that sits on "top" of the TV "set," although it is often located several feet away in an equipment rack. The set-top box descrambles the premium channels and provides a tuner for the higher cable numbers that very old TVs did not support.  over the broadband network without the need for hardware upgrades or specialist installation. The customer will simply be able to use VOD in place of NVOD NVOD Near Video On Demand  (it uses the same 55 channel part of the digital cable service).

The DIVA system consists of several elements, including video servers, content management centres, billing interfaces, VOD system software, access network service multiplexers, and optical networks. These elements create an on-demand delivery system that scales to accommodate variables such as title storage, services supported, service providers supported, deployment locations, and number of NTL customers supported.

VOD is so strategically important to the positioning of digital cable services within the UK that ntl has decided to have two VOD technology suppliers, the second of which will be announced in due course.
