Six days after Claremont committed nine errors in the West Regional baseball final (Bell's last start), Rensselaer made a championship-record eight.

Bell, starting on his 24th birthday, took advantage and helped Cal Lutheran to a 10-5 losers' bracket victory over the Red Hawks in the NCAA NCAA

``I think what it is,'' explained Cal Lutheran coach Marty Slimak, ``is if he pitches well, after a few innings the other team starts pressing.''

Neither Bell nor Rensselaer coach Karl Steffen offered an explanation. ``I wish I knew what caused so many errors like today,'' Steffen said.

Although the Kingsmen had 10 hits, the Red Hawks put up 12. Only three of Cal Lutheran's runs were earned.

Left fielder Adam Rauch went 3 for 3 for the Kingsmen and catcher Tom McGee was 3 for 4. They were two of eight Kingsmen who drove in runs.

Bell (10-3) allowed two earned runs and struck out 10 in seven innings. ``I'm sure it's a great birthday present to get a win in the World Series,'' said Slimak.

There were no gifts for the Red Hawks. The record-breaking error was a slow grounder in the eighth inning that rolled through first baseman Jason Angel's legs. He called for time and changed gloves immediately, but it was too late. Rensselaer (29-5) was well on its way to elimination.

The Kingsmen (31-13-1), meanwhile, will face the winner of today's Upper Iowa-William Paterson (N.J.) at 9 a.m. (PDT PDT

``The way the tournament's designed, most teams are going to lose one or two games,'' said Slimak. ``Getting a chance to play again right away really helped us out.''
