DIV. III MATCH TO SPOTLIGHT VALLEYBALL.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

Coach Bill Schnobrich of Village Christian almost wishes he could be a fan tonight when his Crusaders meet Chaminade in a Southern Section Division III

 boys' volleyball semifinal.

``This is going to be a wonderful match to watch,'' Schnobrich said. ``I wish I could just sit back and enjoy it. But I'll be working.''

So, too, will Chaminade coach Eric Dick. The Eagles (19-3) and the Crusaders (24-0) figure to give the crowd at Glendale College good value on the price of admission for the 7 p.m. match.

``We're expecting a five-game war,'' Schnobrich said.

The teams haven't played each other this year or in recent seasons, but the players are familiar with each other. Chaminade seniors Paul Jocas and Adam Hickerson play club volleyball with Village junior Nick Manghelli.

``It should be fun. It's a win-win situation for the Valley,'' Schnobrich said.

Chaminade was taken to a fifth game and heckled by a rowdy Laguna Beach student body.

``You've got a bunch of kids in their stands that are screaming obscenities to our kids and our kids are just ignoring it and playing,'' Dick said. ``That was the best part.''

The Eagles made quick work of the Artists in the decisive game, winning 15-6 after leading 12-0.

``That was a big step. We just wanted to stay pumped up because the crowd was giving us a lot of crap,'' Hickerson said. ``We wanted it to win, I guess more than they did.''

While Village Christian's veterans reached the section quarterfinals last year, Chaminade is new to the playoff scene.

in the Laguna Beach match. And they can't afford similar meltdowns against a much stronger opponent in the Crusaders.

``It's mainly going to be a keep-your-cool kind of game,'' Hickerson said. ``We can't get down on ourselves. . . . I know some of the players on that Village Christian team, and they're pretty good. But I think we can beat them as long as we keep our cool and play smart.''

Both teams are balanced. Chaminade has an all-around threat in Jocas at setter setter: see sporting dog.

Village Christian counters with its junior trio of Manghelli, Ken Benesh and Travis Atkinson. Senior Josh Seffel is another weapon for the Crusaders.

``It's not a matter of shutting down one guy,'' Schnobrich said of Chaminade. ``It makes it difficult to prepare for them. I would think they will have a very difficult time preparing for us as well.''
