``I don't think we played as badly as we looked in the first half,'' said Harvard Westlake coach Ned Smith. ``The wind seemed to keep them in it. It kept us from clearing it out and kept giving them extra chances. That's tough because they are a very dangerous team on their throws.''

Freshman Jessica Younger scored from about 18 yards, when she controlled a ball the Spartans' defense failed to clear. She set herself and looped a shot over La Canada's Lauren Arase in the 67th minute.

``While Jessica is a freshman she sometimes does freshman things,'' Smith said. ``She has amazing a·maze

The fact that Harvard Westlake's lone goal came in the second half with the wind at its backs was no coincidence Coincidence is the noteworthy alignment of two or more events or circumstances without obvious causal connection. In the first half against the wind, Harvard-Westlake had no shots on goal and struggled to get the ball to its half of the field. La Canada, meanwhile, had four shots on goal, including two that required dramatic saves from Sara Deckers to keep the game scoreless.

``We wouldn't be where we are without Sara,'' Smith said. ``She made some saves like that against Hart earlier this season that changed our entire season.''

When the teams switched sides after the half, it was the Wolverines who were on the attack and the Spartans who struggled to get their offense going.

Harvard-Westlake will face Bishop Montgomery of Torrance in the semifinals Tuesday at a site to be determined today.
