DIV. II BOYS QUARTERS: WIND, RIVERSIDE POLY RUIN LANCASTER HOPES : RIVERSIDE POLY 3 LANCASTER 1.

Lancaster (20-5-3) made a second-half rally, but it fell short in a 3-1 loss in the Division II boys' soccer quarterfinals Thursday.

Eagles coach John Cox's decision to take the wind in the first half, based on his team's ability to jump on opponents early, nearly paid off when a Kamaron Kent shot banged off the post in the first eight minutes.

``That was about the only chance we got in the first half,'' said Eagles senior Billy Wright. ``(Poly) has a great defense. They can just head balls out of the box.''

More damaging to Lancaster's upset bid was Adam Beck-Slaten's goal just before the end of the half to put the fourth-seeded Bears (25-2) up 1-0.

The lead grew to 2-0 midway Midway, island group (2 sq mi/5.2 sq km), central Pacific, c.1,150 mi (1,850 km) NW of Honolulu, comprising Sand and Eastern islands with the surrounding atoll. ``That gave us some momentum,'' Wright said. ``But they came right back on us again.''

And to the Eagles' dismay, the Bears took advantage of the wind after Lancaster didn't in the opening half. On a free kick 40 yards away, Kellen Hiroto's ball from the left side fluttered in high in the air and tucked itself into the top right corner of the net. Lancaster goalie Miguel Lopez had no room to make a save attempt.

``That was a beautiful shot,'' said Cox, whose team won two road matches at El Rancho El Rancho may refer to:
