CALABASAS - Las Virgenes educators want to take funds the governor has proposed spending on extending the middle school year and instead use it to reduce class sizes for those grades.

Saying the district's achievement test scores prove its effectiveness as educators, the school board is asking Gov. Gray Davis to grant more flexibility to high-achieving campuses as he sets out to improve the academic performance of middle schools.

``We've earned the right, based on our exemplary API (Application Programming Interface) A language and message format used by an application program to communicate with the operating system or some other control program such as a database management system (DBMS) or communications protocol.  scores, to have the latitude latitude, angular distance of any point on the surface of the earth north or south of the equator. Last year, Davis proposed a voluntary program to extend middle school calendars by six weeks to help students better prepare for high school.

A state official said the governor's proposal is very specific, and that the district instead should use its discretionary funds for desired programs.

``The initiative is very specific in its goal to increase instructional time,'' said Theresa Garcia, assistant secretary of education for the governor. ``This was not designed to be a class-size reduction proposal.''

But Las Virgenes officials said the proposal doesn't allow them to focus on programs they feel are better suited for their district.

The board passed a resolution that seeks to allow the funding to be used in alternative ways if a school has scored an 800 or above on the Academic Performance Index, which measures student performance.

All but one elementary school elementary school: see school.  within the district scored above the 800 mark. Its two middle schools, Lindero Canyon and A.E. Wright, scored 857 and 846, respectively.

Officials did not discuss the amount of funding being considered.
