DISTRICT WANTS DEVELOPER TO DONATE LAND FOR SCHOOL.

Byline: R.A. Hutchinson Hutchinson, city (1990 pop. 39,308), seat of Reno co., S central Kans., on the Arkansas River; inc. 1872. It is a commercial and industrial center in a grain (especially wheat), livestock, and oil region.  Daily News Staff Writer

A pending proposal to more than triple the number of residences on the Westlake Westlake, city (1990 pop. 27,018), Cuyahoga co., NE Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland; inc. as a city 1956. A growing city, its various manufactures include ink and plastics.  North development site means a possible influx of 500 to 600 students to the Las Virgenes Unified School District Las Virgenes Unified School District (LVUSD) is a K-12 school district in north-west Los Angeles County, USA consisting of 14 public schools in the cities of Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Westlake Village, and several small portions of the West Hills section of Los Angeles. .

To accommodate the enrollment surge, school officials want developers to donate two acres of land for a small school near the project's park and provide access to utilities for the facility.

Originally, developers of the 130-acre site had received approval for about 183 single-family, attached homes. Under a revised plan, pending before the Westlake Village City Council, the number of homes has been increased to 595 free-standing free-standing Managed care adjective Referring to a physically and, often, financially discrete entity–eg, a surgical center, that is separate from, but may be affiliated with, a hospital; FS facilities may provide ambulatory surgery, emergency or  structures.

``We were the only ones negatively affected,'' said Don Zimring, assistant superintendent-business services for the school district. ``Everything else - the traffic, the open space - was better.''

So district officials began negotiating with the developers, Western Pacific, to make room for a small school that would be adjacent a four-acre park.

``It has to be near the park or otherwise we wouldn't be able to provide a play area,'' Zimring said.

Developers agreed to the arrangement, submitting a revised proposal to the City Council that includes a school site. The revision will be discussed in a public hearing at the April 27 council meeting.

At the first public hearing in March, residents raised questions about the proximity of the homes to each other and the location of the park. Zimring said those design issues must be resolved before the school district can move forward with plans for a new school.

Dr. John Fitzpatrick There have been a number of people named John Fitzpatrick:
  • John Fitzpatrick (unionist), former leader of the Chicago Federation of Labor
  • John FitzPatrick (1915–1997), former Australian federal politician
, superintendent for the Las Virgenes School District, said there are several options on how the district can approach the school. For example, it could be a kindergarten kindergarten [Ger.,=garden of children], system of preschool education. Friedrich Froebel designed (1837) the kindergarten to provide an educational situation less formal than that of the elementary school but one in which children's creative play instincts would be  through second-grade facility, serving mainly as a neighborhood school for families in the development area.

Or, Fitzpatrick said, the site could be developed as a magnet school magnet school

. A magnet school typically has a specific focus of study such as science or the arts and serves students who excel from throughout a school district.

``We're looking at a variety of options for the site, such as a magnet school. That's one scenario,'' Fitzpatrick said.
