DISTRICT VOTES TO BEGIN PURCHASE OF SCHOOL SITE.

Byline: Bhavna Mistry Staff Writer

Despite concerns that a number of potential hazards surround the proposed Golden Valley High School site, the Hart district has agreed to begin proceedings to buy the land for its fifth high school.

``We want to buy a piece of property that is construction-ready and environmentally safe,'' said Trustee Philip Ellis, elected to the board in November. ``If it's not ready, we don't buy it.''

The approval to begin proceedings came during a special board meeting Tuesday that started with a 3-hour tour of the school site.

As a new board member, Ellis said that he felt much better voting on the proposed school site after touring the land.

``I was glad to have an opportunity to have a look at that,'' Ellis said. ``You get a better flavor and feel of where the school site is and what areas it would cover.''

``It took away a lot of my concerns,'' Ellis added.

Although the purchase deal has begun, officials said that no money will enter into the agreement until the state Department of Toxic Substances Control determines the site is safe to begin construction.

If the DTSC approves the site, after field tests now under way, a deposit will be placed into an escrow account.

The purchase price hasn't been set, but district officials estimate that it will be about $6.5 million.

While Tuesday's vote begins the purchase proceedings, the district will not take possession of the land without a second board vote.

The nonprofit foundation formed to help the district obtain land for new schools owns approximately 130 acres, including the Golden Valley site of about 40 acres.
