Landaker submitted a letter saying he will resign effective Jan. 6, after which the school board has 60 days to either appoint a replacement or order an election.

``He felt it was time to move on,'' said board member Bill Olenick. ``I'm sure going to miss him. He's an outstanding board member. Steve brings a level of personal integrity that everyone in public office can learn from.''

Landaker, a billboard company executive, first served on the board from 1989 to 1993 and was appointed in March 1996 to fill the seat left vacant by the death of board President Tony Welch Welch , William Henry 1850-1934.

Landaker then was elected to a full term in November 1997. He could not be reached Tuesday for comment.

Landaker's departure from the board comes after the Aug. 21 Pearblossom Highway crash that killed his daughter and son-in-law SON-IN-LAW, in Latin called gener. The husband of one's daughter. .

Superintendent Robert Girolamo said Landaker is taking up residence in South Dakota South Dakota (dəkō`tə), state in the N central United States. It is bordered by North Dakota (N), Minnesota and Iowa (E), Nebraska (S), and Wyoming and Montana (W). , where he owns property. Landaker had been considering the move long before his daughter's death, Girolamo said.

The board at today's meeting will consider a district administrators' recommendation to appoint a replacement rather than hold a special election, which would cost between $100,000 and $250,000.

If the board decides to appoint someone, that person will have to run in the next board election in November 1999, Olenick said.

The suggested time line in a district staff report sets a deadline of Jan. 1 for interested applicants to submit a letter of interest and resume. Interviews would be conducted at the board's meeting Jan. 6, and an appointment made Jan. 7.

Olenick said he favored making an appointment over holding an election to save money.

said Landaker submitted his letter of resignation to the district last week. He described Landaker as a trustee who cares tremendously about students, is a community leader, and will be greatly missed.

``He's brought great balance to the board. We will seek someone who will bring that balance,'' Carney said. ``If we don't have an election, we will find someone who will bring balance to the board and keep us moving ahead.''

Landaker was appointed in 1996 following a four-hour board session during which 11 candidates were interviewed and the trustees failed four times to agree on a replacement.
