SAUGUS - The Saugus Union School District The Saugus Union School District is a school district in the Santa Clarita Valley that serves the Saugus, Valencia, and Canyon Country communities within the city of Santa Clarita, California. As of March 25,2006, it has 15 elementary schools.  has scaled back a planned elementary-school campus to accommodate 720 instead of 920 students, due to burgeoning construction costs.

The panel unanimously approved the changes Tuesday for Bouquet Canyon School, which would eliminate two buildings and eight classrooms. The revised plan would shave shave (shav)

``It's the intent of the board to honor the commitments we've made to the community,'' board President Judy Umeck said. ``Because of that, we have to revisit re·vis·it

some projects to complete them in a timely and fiscally responsible manner.''

Since the district began planning the school in 2001, costs have risen some 17 percent. That's partly due to a building boom triggered by a slew of construction bonds passed by California voters over the past two years, said Robert Cutting, assistant superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. ``It's supply and demand right now,'' he said. ``The contractors have an awful lot of business and they can demand a higher price.''

When completed in 2005, Bouquet Canyon would serve as the final home of the existing elementary school elementary school: see school. , which has been housed in a series of portables next to the permanent site since 1989.

The new plans would fold two free-standing buildings - an office and a kindergarten - into existing structures, Cutting said. That would reduce the number of regular classrooms from 34 to 26 and shrink capacity to 720 students. But there will be room for expansion to 920 pupils if needed.

``We want to stay on budget so we're going to reduce the first phase,'' he said. ``If we need additional capacity, we can add a second phase.''

If the new design can stay within budget, Cutting said, it would help the district control costs for future projects, including the proposed Tesoro Del Valle School, also set to open 2005.

``What we'd like to do is try and get what is basically a master plan,'' he said. ``In this time of rising construction costs, the more you can control the designs, the better you can control the costs.''
