DISTRICT TO WEIGH RAISING MINIMUM GPA FOR GRADS.

Byline: Karen Maeshiro Daily News Staff Writer

In an attempt to raise the academic bar for students, Eastside Union School District officials are considering raising the grade-point average that students must achieve before graduating from the eighth grade.

The minimum grade-point average would increase from 1.5 to 1.83 - roughly from a low C-minus to a low C - under a proposal to be discussed by trustees at today's board meeting.

The board will hold its meeting at 6 p.m. in Room One at the district office, 6742 E. Ave. H.

Under the plan, the district would require a 1.83 GPA for eighth-graders as a graduation requirement. Those who do not achieve that would not attend a regular high school but be referred to a community school operated by Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County to get extra help, Larson said.

At present, eighth-grade graduation requirements include passing tests in reading, writing and math.

The Eastside board also will discuss at today's meeting whether to align the district's eighth-grade ``exit criteria'' with those recommended in the valleywide proposal.

``We are happy with the way it is. We had representatives on the teams,'' Larson said.
