trustees will look within their own administrative staff for a successor to Superintendent Robert Girolamo, who is planning to retire next year.

Girolamo, 60, was hired in 1993 and is credited with leading the district out of a financial crisis that pushed it to the brink of bankruptcy bankruptcy, in law, settlement of the liabilities of a person or organization wholly or partially unable to meet financial obligations. The purposes are to distribute, through a court-appointed receiver, the bankrupt's assets equitably among creditors and, in most .

``We were in financial straits Straits: see Dardanelles; Bosporus. . He came in and turned it around,'' Trustee Wilda Andrejcik said. ``We are now on the cutting edge on everything, and it's all under his direction and leadership.

``He's been a fine leader, and we are very sorry to see him go.''

The board announced Wednesday that Girolamo planned to retire in July 2002, and said they will be looking to promote from within.

Trustees want to appoint someone by the end of the current school year so Girolamo's successor can spend the next year training under him.

The board will put together a package of criteria of what it is seeking in applicants, Nelson said.

Girolamo replaced former Superintendent Kenneth Brummel, whom trustees paid $100,000 to vacate To annul, set aside, or render void; to surrender possession or occupancy.

The term vacate has two common usages in the law. With respect to real property, to vacate the premises means to give up possession of the property and leave the area totally devoid of contents.

Trustees at the time said the payment avoided a costly court battle over whether Brummel breached his contract by failing to head off the financial crisis that caused the district to end its 1991-92 school year $6.2 million in the red.

Board member Bill Olenick said Girolamo has done an outstanding job and has been a steady, consistent leader.

``Bob has played a major part in bringing the district back from bankruptcy,'' Olenick said. ``Bob has a unique management style. I think they call it hallway management. He walks the hallways, is very accessible, and is a hands-on administrator. He has done an outstanding job in a number of areas, and financially I can't say enough about what he has done for the district.''

Olenick said the district has within its administrative ranks several people who are capable of assuming the post of superintendent.

``We have worked to develop individuals and to bring them along. I don't think we will have a problem at all of selecting somebody in-house In-house
