DISTRICT TO CONSIDER BOND; CONEJO SCHOOLS NEED FUNDS FOR REPAIRS, FACILITIES.

Byline: Enrique Rivero Daily News Staff Writer

The Conejo school district board will be asked to consider putting a bond measure on the November ballot to help the district upgrade and modernize its aging schools.

``Only half our schools have air conditioning in them - that's a high priority in our community,'' Mortimer said Monday.

The district also needs new facilities to accommodate Gov. Wilson's proposal to extend the class-size reduction program to the fourth grade.

Add that to an expected influx of anywhere from 325 to 600 new students next year and the result is a need for portable classroom space that can only be met through the proposed general obligation bond.

``A year ago we were not full, now we are,'' Mortimer said. ``It's been a very quick change from having room to not having room.''

Based on results of a recent joint school, city and Conejo Recreation and Park District survey of 400 residents, there appears to be ample support in the community to pass a bond measure, Mortimer said.

Though the amount of the bonds has not yet been set, Mortimer said that the Conejo district has similar needs to the Ventura Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts. , which just passed an $81 million bond measure.

The school board is scheduled to be briefed on the proposed bond measure at the 7:30 p.m. Thursday meeting at the district office, 1400 E. Janss Road. The district only will receive information about the bond Thursday and will not formally vote on the proposal until a special meeting 8 a.m. June 27.

But several board members said Monday they would favor a bond measure because of the district's acute need to improve its campuses.

``I'd love to see it pass - it's a necessity for us, it's the only way we're going to accomplish what needs to be done,'' board member Dorothy Beaubien said.

Something that may hurt the measure's chances of passing is if one or more of the recalls now under way against Mayor Judy Lazar and City Council members Elois Zeanah and Andy Fox For the FoxTrot character, see .

``It's two separate items but sometimes people don't differentiate between the two,'' Didio said.

The Moorpark Unified School District also is planning for a bond measure on the November ballot. Though district officials are still assessing Moorpark's needs to determine the amount, at last report the tally was about $24 million, Moorpark trustee Clint Harper said.

Among projects included in tentative lists for bond money expenditures have been a new gymnasium for Moorpark High School Moorpark High School, located in Moorpark, California, is a public high school in the Moorpark Unified School District and currently has an enrollment of 2,478 students.[1] , a multipurpose mul·ti·pur·pose

to help alleviate a space crunch at the elementary level, other needs are not so clear cut to Harper.

``There's a need for classroom space, certainly, particularly in the elementary level in the class-size reduction program - we're running out of space,'' Harper said. ``Some of the items on the list I'm not as sure - I'll have to see the final list proposed by (district superintendent Tom) Duffy.''

The Conejo board must decide on the bond issue by July 3 in order to meet the deadline for the Nov. 4 ballot, according to Mortimer.

``If the board does decide to pursue an election we would do another survey that would give us an idea what the community would support,'' Mortimer said.
