OAK PARK - The school board plans to adopt new field-trip guidelines - including a mandatory chaperone chaperone /chap·er·one/ (shap´er-on) someone or something that accompanies and oversees another.

The Oak Park Unified School District's school board members decided at Tuesday's meeting that guidelines provided by the California School Board Association for off-campus school-related events would be more specific than the district policy currently in place. The board is scheduled to vote on the issue in October.

Compared with the two-sentence supervision entry in the district policy, the CSBA policy lists seven separate requirements, including a mandatory age for chaperones of at least 21.

All chaperones must be assigned a prescribed group of students, whom they must monitor continuously, the CSBA policy states. Adults must also clearly apprise the students of their responsibilities before the trip.

The staff will prepare modified guidelines for the board to review next month, officials said.
