DISTRICT STUDIES PHONE PLAN; CLASSROOM SYSTEM WOULD EXCEED $2 MILLION.

Byline: Cecilia Chan Daily News Staff Writer

The Conejo Valley The Conejo Valley is a region spanning both Southeastern Ventura County and Northwest Los Angeles County in Southern California, United States. It was discovered in 1542 by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and eventually became part of the Rancho El Conejo land grant by  school board on Tuesday will consider spending more than $2 million to improve communication at local high schools, through such projects as putting a telephone in every classroom.

``What we intend on having is a telephone in every classroom by the end of the summer,'' Mortimer said. And ``within 18 months we will have every school completed so teachers can talk to teachers, to the office and to outside lines.''

If the funding is approved, the public address speakers and the fire and bell systems also would be installed this summer.

The district's plan to expand and upgrade its communication system has nothing to do with the recent school shootings in Colorado and most recently Georgia, he said.

``The incident that happened in Colorado would not change what we have been doing the last six to eight months,'' he said. The improvements ``would have happened anyway. It was our intent all along to put some type of communication in every classroom.

``The teachers are pretty anxious to get it and we are happy to give it to them.''

School board member Pat Phelps supported the proposal.

``It's more important now, the communications aspects of it, having the classrooms accessible to the office in case of an emergency,'' she said, in light of the school shootings.

Voters in November approved the bond measure, which will renovate classrooms in the district's 28 campuses, many of which are at least 30 years old.
