DISTRICT SETTLES WITH FIRMS ON SCHOOL PROJECTS.

The firms claimed they were owed $1.3 million of the $4 million building project, and the school board approved the settlements at Tuesday's board meeting to avoid further legal action.

The gyms at Valley View and Sinaloa middle schools opened last fall after being under construction for about a year and missing the scheduled opening at the end of the 1996 school year.

Under the settlements approved Tuesday, the board agreed to pay $9,340 to Anderson Consolidated Corp. and Metalox Inc., which had a $980,000 contract for cement and metal work; $47,500 to Sage Electrical Co. for electrical work; and a $45,000 settlement to Wainwright Wainwright, town (1991 pop. 4,732), E Alta., Canada, SE of Edmonton and near the Sask. border. It is a trade center and railroad division point for an oil and natural gas area. It has oil refineries, grain elevators, and flour mills. Nearby is a military base.  Mechanical Inc., for mechanical work.

``I don't think we're happy with anything we consider to be over cost,'' said school board President Janice DiFatta. ``It also seems to be the norm that you're going to have overruns and different odds and ends and delays.''
