DISTRICT SETS OUT ON CHIEF SEARCH.

Byline: Sue Doyle Staff Writer

ACTON - Wanted: Fiscally responsible, global thinker with district experience who works well with school trustees.

Contact: Acton-Agua Dulce Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts. .

The 1,900-pupil school system's board is looking statewide for a permanent replacement to interim Superintendent John Hutak, who has stood at the district's helm since October. Hutak announced last month that he needs to return to his consulting business.

Tonight during a special meeting, the board will sit down with Keith Daniels, a consultant it hired to conduct the search through Executive Search Services, a division of the Sacramento-based California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  School Board Association.

In fact, the board will only see the short list of contenders.

Parents, principals and union representatives on a 12-member advisory committee will get first dibs on the resumes. After reviewing the qualifications, the team will then pass on names of folks it has deemed acceptable to the board.

School officials agreed that having a team of community people and school staff with the search will help in the long run, because they will all be affected by the hire.

someone to head your school district, a little extra cost is worth it,'' Hutak said.

It was an additional $1,000 for the committee on top of $5,500, a flat fee charged to all districts for a search by the association.

But board members also have distinct ideas in mind for the type of person they will hire to lead the financially struggling school district onto solid ground and raise the bar with curriculum.

For board member Mark Distaso, it is important to find someone who can think long range, from stepping up school curriculum to planning the best use of the district's facilities.

He wants a person who comes from a district that has dealt with real issues, like ones the Acton district has, can troubleshoot To find out why something does not work and to fix the problem. Since the district doesn't have an assistant superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. It was usually the lowest rank that could be held by a European officer, most of whom joined the police at this rank.  in charge of business services like many other districts do, the hire will have to be especially keen at finances, said trustee Ron Bird.

Bird also wants someone with district experience and mediation mediation, in law, type of intervention in which the disputing parties accept the offer of a third party to recommend a solution for their controversy. Mediation has long been a part of international law, frequently involving the use of an international commission,  skills.

``You have a community to keep happy, a staff to keep happy, and you have to get the students educated,'' Bird said. ``So it's more than a full-time job.''

The new superintendent will oversee a district that's experiencing a decline in enrollment. In addition, the district is trying to build a permanent facility for Vasquez High School and has applied for about $13 million in hardship funding from the state to help pay for construction.

Hutak came on board in fall 2005 after Linda Wagner quit to become superintendent of the Keppel Union School District.
