VALENCIA - Faced with a $1 million shortfall, the Newhall School District The Newhall School District is a school district in the Santa Clarita Valley that serves the Valencia and Newhall communities within the city of Santa Clarita, California, as well as the Stevenson Ranch community in unincorporated Los Angeles County.  is looking at budget cuts for the next school year, district officials said.

Don Hughes, assistant superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. It was usually the lowest rank that could be held by a European officer, most of whom joined the police at this rank.  for business, said the district has not yet decided where to trim expenses but explained that some of the shortfall is due to a significant reduction of multitrack mul·ti·track

year-round funds at the state level.

``We're looking across the board at all positions and programs, but we want to try and identify (areas that) won't have as big an impact on children,'' Hughes said of cutting costs.

Parents have raised concerns that the district's popular music program, the only one of its kind in the valley, would be cut. The program is already losing two teachers this year, and officials did acknowledge that these positions won't be filled this school year. The program is an important one for the district, and falls low on the list of potential cuts, Hughes said.

``Music is a very high priority for the board and it's something that we don't want (to cut),'' he added.

Another cost-cutting factor stems from attendance growth estimates in previous budgets that have fallen short, reducing the state's per-pupil allotment A portion, share, or division. The proportionate distribution of shares of stock in a corporation. The partition and distribution of land.

``What we're looking at is the best way to really hone the district's expenditures so we're getting the most bang for our buck,'' Hughes said.

The deadline for the 2001-02 budget is July 1, but Hughes said the district will have mapped out the majority of the plan by the end of March.
