SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - The Newhall School District's seven year-round campuses are benefiting from the winter break as maintenance crews make repairs without disturbing classes.

Fixing an underground plumbing line and touching up paint on walls and railings are among the improvements under way while students and teachers are on vacation.

``It's one of the few times of the year when we have this window,'' said Jared Cascadden, director of facilities for the Newhall district. ``It's one of the only times when all the students are out at the same time.''

 and then repave, but it will all be done before classes resume next week,'' Cascadden said. ``Everybody likes to be off this time of year, but we've got about nine people working around the district.''

Cascadden added that crosswalks are being repainted at Peachland Avenue School, along with a number of other minor painting jobs across the district.
