DISTRICT NEEDS FOR MONEY FOR MODERNIZATION.

Byline: KAREN MAESHIRO Staff Writer

NORTH EDWARDS -- Muroc Joint Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts.  needs to come up with more than $678,000 in matching funds Noun 1. matching funds - funds that will be supplied in an amount matching the funds available from other sources

Muroc officials are considering applying for state hardship funding to get additional money but under state law must first take some initial steps, including hiking hiking

The board recently approved spending up to $2,500 for a consultant to perform a study that would allow the district to increase the levy charged to home-builders from $1.65 per square foot to $2.63 per square foot, the standard rate set by the state.

``It's not going to do much for our revenue, but what it will do is put us into the process to get us into hardship and be eligible for building funds,'' Superintendent Rob Challinor said.

Under a 60-40 match scheme, the state's share of the cost is $1.01 million, and the district's match is $678,462.

Muroc must wait a year before doing another developer fee study to determine whether the district can charge higher than the standard fee.

Districts may charge more than the standard fee if certain conditions are met, such as having passed a school construction bond measure in the past four years and having 20 percent or more of classes in portable buildings.

Trustees have discussed within the past year the possibility of pursuing a $6 million bond measure to build and improve school facilities but have taken no action.

The district receives about $2,000 a year in developer fee revenue, said Priscilla Quinn, chief business officer.

``We don't have our share of the funding. We have to come up with some way to do it,'' Quinn said.

Another option being looked at is the state is offering more money if the district would withdraw its application for the Boron project and resubmit Verb 1. resubmit - submit (information) again to a program or automatic system

The Boron project has encountered previous hurdles. The district last year challenged a decision by the state to cancel the project because state officials said the district was tardy tar·dy

The district earlier this year was given another chance to apply for the state aid and was approved.
