DISTRICT LINES TO STAY OTHER WAYS TO FIGHT OVERCROWDING EYED.

Byline: Karen Maeshiro Staff Writer

LANCASTER - Westside Union School District will not change attendance boundaries for the 2001-02 school year and instead will take other steps to address overcrowding overcrowding

 at some schools.

Those steps include prohibiting new intradistrict transfers - in which students are allowed to attend a school outside their attendance zone - to Rancho ran·cho

In addition, siblings of students presently on intradistrict transfers will not be able to attend those two schools, officials said.

The district had considered changing attendance boundaries but scaled down those plans after parents showed up by the hundreds at board meetings to oppose the idea. This week trustees dropped even the scaled-back boundary change.

Administrative staff members recommended leaving all attendance boundaries unchanged for the next school year except for a small area near Rancho Vista Boulevard and Avenue P, but trustees at Tuesday night's meeting decided to keep everything the same.

``We are not changing anyone else. We are going to wait a year. It seemed fair and right to wait and do it all at once,'' trustee Scott Gmur said.

Other recommendations adopted include requiring annual verification of residency status and sending students who will come from the proposed City Ranch housing development in Palmdale to Leona Valley School.

The district also will try to locate so-called ``boundary jumpers,'' students who attend Westside schools but don't live in the district.

At least since 1988, the district has for the most part not allowed students who live outside the district to attend Westside schools. Children of Westside employees who are not district residents are allowed to attend.

The district has also made exceptions for students from Gorman and southern Kern Kern, river, 155 mi (249 km) long, rising in the S Sierra Nevada Mts., E Calif., and flowing south, then southwest to a reservoir in the extreme southern part of the San Joaquin valley. The river has Isabella Dam as its chief facility.  County to attend Neenach School, which only has 60 students, officials said.

Instead of adding portable classrooms at Hillview, the district will use ``roving'' teachers in temporarily empty classrooms and ask teachers to teach an extra class for extra pay, depending on how many students enroll in the next school year.

``Teachers would move from room to room when other teachers are on their prep periods,'' said Lori Ordway-Peck, assistant superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. The district also is forming committees with parents as members to address the issues of facilities development, switching to a multitrack mul·ti·track

Parents had suggested that the district convert to a multitrack year-round calendar instead of changing attendance boundaries.
