BURBANK -- Hoping to keep its campuses drug-free, the Burbank Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts.  board has renewed an $8,400 contract for drug-sniffing canines at seven schools.

The district has contracted for the service since 2003 with Interquest Detection Canines of San Marino San Marino, city, United States

Two high schools, two continuation schools and three middle schools will use campus discretionary funds to pay for the random searches, officials said.

The program costs $1,500 a year for the high schools and $1,200 a year for the middle schools, officials said.

District officials said the dogs have ``helped considerably'' in sniffing out drugs, although they could not provide statistics.

``All the data tells us there is more marijuana and methamphetamine use,'' said Hank Jannace, director of pupil services for the 15,000-student district.

Monterey Continuation High School A continuation high school is an alternative to a comprehensive high school primarily for students who are considered at-risk of not graduating at the normal pace. The requirements to graduate are the same but the scheduling is more flexible to allow students to earn their credits  Principal Ann Brooks said a black Labrador named Rebel and a handler have been visiting her school about every six weeks.

``It catches everybody off guard,'' said Brooks, who added that the dogs have been a good deterrent at Monterey.

Scott Edmonds, president of Interquest, has three handlers and three dogs working the Los Angeles County area. So far this year, the dogs located three handguns in cars, although none in Burbank.

The dogs most commonly detect marijuana and methamphetamines, followed by beer.
