DISTRICT HOPEFULS SHARE VISIONS FOR BURBANK'S SCHOOLS.

When voters go to the polls on Feb. 23, they will be filling a majority of the seats on the Burbank school board at a time when the district is embarking on plans to improve student scores and build a new high school.

The candidates who are competing for three of the five Burbank school board seats in the primary election include two incumbents and three challengers.

Board members Mike McDonald Mike McDonald (born June 22, 1958 in North Hollywood, California) is a former professional American football player who played long snapper for nine seasons in the NFL.  and Elena Hubbell will face Glen Forsch, Norman Furman and Richard Raad.

Voters will also elect two City Council members on Feb. 23.

Improving student achievement has been an important focus in the campaign, which has also brought a variety of issues from anti-crime measures to partnerships with community businesses to district building plans into discussion.

McDonald said the district's master plan for student achievement is a good one.

``We put in a strategic master plan to lead the district into the next century,'' McDonald said. ``We have a plan in Burbank that holds people accountable.''

McDonald, a real estate agent, said he campaigned hard during his board term for a $112.5 million school-bond measure that voters passed two years ago to build new schools and improve existing facilities.

McDonald said his service on the board has given him the experience to help lead the district as it implements its master plans.

``I'm just committed to our schools and to Burbank,'' McDonald said. ``I want to raise my kids here. It's a great town, and I love it.''

Hubbell, a Realtor Realtor

In the United States a designation used to describe a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR).

Notes:
The term "realtor" is a registered trademark and encompasses agents, brokers and associates who are members of a real-estate firm associated with

``I think that we've accomplished a lot, but there's still a lot more that needs to be done - implementing the strategic master plan, building a new Burbank High School Burbank High School may refer to:

and modernizing John Burroughs High,'' she said.

Hubbell said she looks forward to carrying out those plans.

``My heart is in it. I want to be a part of it and carry it through to completion,'' Hubbell said. ``I have experience, and continuity is really important right now.''

Because the majority of the board is up for election, ``it's vital that we continue with the goals we've set out,'' she said. ``They actually are the community's goals, not our goals, but we don't want the momentum slowed down.''

Furman, a marketing director for American Independent Bank in Burbank, advocates class-size reduction and teaching phonics-based reading at all grade levels.

``We need to improve the literacy of children and focus on reading, writing and arithmetic, and we need to make sure the students are prepared when they leave to become future leaders Future Leaders is a UK schools-led charitable organisation that aims to widen the pool of talented leaders especially for urban challenging secondary schools. It was founded in March 2006 by Nat Wei, a former founder of Teach First. ,'' Furman said.

He suggests tapping the business community for help.

``Businesses need to partner with the schools, because there's never enough money for what you need to do,'' Furman said. ``It would be nice to have business help by expanding preschool and after-school programs. There's so many things business could do to help.''

Raad is a flooring contractor and the father of four children. Two of them attend Burbank schools.

``I would enhance communication between the district and parents,'' Raad said. ``I would also work to create partnerships between parents, teachers and students . . . and assist in furthering communications with parents, teachers, and students.''

Teacher accountability, he said, needs to be part of that plan.

``I think teachers should be tested to see if they're competent,'' Raad said.

He said his background in construction would be a plus when the district uses school bond money to build and improve schools.

Forsch, who directs three corporations, says he supports equal education for all students.

``Not everyone's going to college, so let's help the people who aren't,'' he said. ``You have to know what students want to do. That's what's going to get them interested.''

Forsch also supports teaching children to read as early as possible.

``This district has a master plan that they have to read by third grade. I want it to be earlier - from kindergarten kindergarten [Ger.,=garden of children], system of preschool education. Friedrich Froebel designed (1837) the kindergarten to provide an educational situation less formal than that of the elementary school but one in which children's creative play instincts would be  to first grade - I want them to be reading.''
