Southern Kern was one of two districts in Kern County to be awarded a ``Get a GRIP'' grant from the Kern County Office of Education in July to participate in the Gang Risk Intervention Program.

The district could qualify for an additional $15,000 grant for the 1998-99 school year that will enable the district to continue some of the activities.

Chase said the district does not have a severe problem with gangs.

``Rosamond has an opportunity to intercede where it is a minor problem before it gets to a crisis problem,'' Chase said. ``We have an opportunity to solve the problem before it becomes a real problem.''

The program will have a full-time coordinator who will oversee the identification of students at risk of joining gangs and who will supervise activities the students are involved in.

Students will be placed in the program based on certain factors, such as attendance and grades.

``We will establish criteria, objective data used to identify students who will benefit from the program,'' Chase said.

Activities will include supervised outings to cultural and athletic events, ``so they can see the world from a different perspective,'' Chase said.

The students also will receive job training to learn how to prepare for a job and obtain interview skills. Parent training workshops, open to all parents, will offer helpful hints on how to be a better parent, how to understand children, how to talk to adolescents and how to set down rules.

District staff also will receive training about gangs, how to spot ``gang tendencies and negative behaviors.''
