With ``shop'' classes that teach crafts such as auto repair or metal and woodworking being phased out on traditional campuses, the school district is looking to fill a training gap, Kerman said. There is a demand among local businesses for workers with basic skills who can be further trained to fit jobs in manufacturing or other trades. The center also would be open during nonschool hours on a contract basis to businesses to train employees.

On Friday, Ron Rudzinski, coordinating the program for the district, traveled to a Kern Kern, river, 155 mi (249 km) long, rising in the S Sierra Nevada Mts., E Calif., and flowing south, then southwest to a reservoir in the extreme southern part of the San Joaquin valley. The river has Isabella Dam as its chief facility.  County occupational center for ideas. The state provided the no-interest loan based on commitments from the business community to contribute to the center over the next 14 years.
