DISTRICT FREEZES ENROLLMENT VOLUNTARY TRANSFERS SOUGHT.

Byline: Bhavna Mistry Staff Writer

STEVENSON RANCH Stevenson Ranch, California (in the 91381 ZIP Code) is a Los Angeles County, USA, unincorporated community west of Santa Clarita a few miles south of Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park. The Stevenson Ranch fountain was redone in 2007.  - Hoping to ease crowding at Stevenson Ranch Elementary, the Newhall school board has frozen enrollment at redefined boundaries and asked parents to voluntarily transfer their youngsters to other campuses.

The moves, unanimously approved Tuesday night by the board, aim to shift 70 pupils who live in Crescent Valley Mobile Estates and two homes on The Old Road from Stevenson Ranch to Wiley Canyon Elementary School elementary school: see school. . The changes will begin this fall, but won't affect sixth-graders.

Additionally, the Stevenson Ranch campus also was closed to new families.

``Yes, the freeze is in order,'' said board member John Castagna. ``It is appropriate. It is the right thing to do. Change is not easy, but over time the families adjust.''

Officials said that Wiley Canyon is the closer school for Crescent Valley children, and those kids should have been assigned there in the first place.

``One of our goals is to try and get our kids closer to their neighborhood schools,'' Castagna said.

added, ``I think these are logical changes for these children.''

The freeze - which will last until new schools are built - will affect new students who live outside the Stevenson Ranch community. Those who already have siblings at the school may continue to go there.

``One of the things I don't like about the freeze is that it breaks up neighborhoods,'' said Board President Steve Tannehill. ``However I don't see how else we can do that.

``There is no permanent home to move them to,'' Tannehill added. ``We have to do what's right.''

Permanent homes for Enclave and Sunset Point youngsters will be the Stevenson Ranch Phase Three school now being built. Mountain Terrace pupils will remain at Wiley Canyon.

``These three major changes come after weeks and weeks of serious consideration and thought,'' said Castagna. ``The decision-making comes from the minds and hearts of each board member.''

``These types of decisions are always difficult,'' said Castagna. ``Overall, I think (parents in) the district was pleased with our decision.''
