Golden Valley High opened in August with a lawn athletic field and dirt track. West Ranch High is under construction and is slated to open next year. Officials plan to install at each campus an artificial football field surrounded by an all-weather track, along with bleachers seating about 500 people.

``The scope of work that we're looking at would be what is similar to what is being done at Saugus and Hart high schools,'' Michael Otavka, the district's facilities director for new construction, said Monday.

Hart officials have been upgrading playing fields at its four existing high schools - Canyon, Hart, Saugus and Valencia - under its Sports Facilities See:

``We're just trying to maximize the fields to get as much use out of them as we can,'' Otavka said.

Vanir, which is already monitoring field renovations at the four high schools, also will oversee proposed projects at Golden Valley and West Ranch high for $284,000 plus up to $12,000 in expenses.

Otavka said the project should be ready for bid in December, with construction expected to begin as early as January, if weather permits.
