DISTRICT'S OVERALL STANDARDIZED TEST RESULTS AVERAGE : PALMDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT CTBS TEST SCORES.

Byline: Karen Maeshiro Daily News Staff Writer

Palmdale School District The Palmdale School District is a school district that serves a major part of the city of Palmdale, California (USA).

The Palmdale School District was first formed in 1888. Approximately 28,000 students are enrolled in the Palmdale School District.

 test results released Wednesday.

Districtwide, the overall score was 47, which is within the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills average range of 45 to 55, officials said.

Joshua Hills School led all 18 schools in the district with the top overall average of 52.

``We feel we are a very academic-oriented school, and we concentrate on delivering the curriculum probably as much as anything,'' said Principal Mark Pospisil, who added that the school has much parent involvement and not a lot of discipline problems.

The Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills is a multiple-choice, national standardized test that covers three subject areas: math, language and reading.

scores are reported in ``national percentiles.'' For example, a fourth-grade student scoring at the 50th percentile percentile,
n the number in a frequency distribution below which a certain percentage of fees will fall. E.g., the ninetieth percentile is the number that divides the distribution of fees into the lower 90% and the upper 10%, or that fee level
in reading has scored at or above where 50 percent of the fourth-graders in the national sample scored.

``We do not see any drastic increase or decrease. The scores are fairly stable,'' said Don Crane, assistant superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. It was usually the lowest rank that could be held by a European officer, most of whom joined the police at this rank.  for pupil personnel services. ``One thing that could be said is that with so much change, growth and transiency, the fact that we were able to maintain constant scores isn't all that bad.''

The test results indicate that math scores are higher than reading and language in the primary grades, but in the eighth grade, the reverse is true, Crane said.

Three districtwide scores were below the average range, those by fourth- and fifth-graders in reading, and by eighth-graders in math, a district report said.

The strongest scores were posted by second- and third-graders in math, and with the exception of grades 7 and 8, math scores tended to be higher than reading and language, the report said. Eighth-graders had the highest reading and language scores in the district.

The higher-performing schools were Barrel Springs, Joshua Hills, the Learning Plaza, Ocotillo, Summerwind and Wildflower wildflower

, the report said. The lower-scoring schools were Manzanita manzanita: see bearberry. , Palm Tree, Tamarisk tamarisk (tăm`ərĭsk), shrub or small tree of the genus Tamarix, native chiefly to the Mediterranean area and to central Asia. The plants are often heathlike and thrive in arid and coastal regions. , Tumbleweed tumbleweed, any of several plants, particularly abundant in prairie and steppe regions, that commonly break from their roots at maturity and, drying into a rounded tangle of light, stiff branches, roll before the wind, covering long distances and scattering seed as  and Yucca.

The report cautioned that the quality of schools should not be judged solely on test scores, since results are affected by extraneous ex·tra·ne·ous

factors such as influxes of new students coming in midyear and increases in the numbers of pupils who speak limited English.

For example, a fourth-grader scoring at the 50th percentile has scored at or above where 50 percent of the fourth-graders in the national sample scored.
