DISTRIBUTION MAGAZINE NAMES TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY'S TOP CARRIERS

RADNOR, Pa., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- DISTRIBUTION magazine, a Chilton Company publication, has announced the names of the companies recognized as quality carriers in its 10th annual "Quest for Quality" program.
DISTRIBUTION's Quest for Quality Awards, unique in the industry, is the only survey in which customers rate their carrier's performance on quality of service delivered and customer satisfaction. It is more market-oriented than the Malcolm H. Baldridge Award which measures a company's ability to produce a quality product or service.
Survey results showed a common theme in this year's competition: In order to be perceived as a quality carrier, transportation companies must be responsive to the special needs of each customer. "When problems, requests or special needs come up, our best carrier is responsive in communicating to everyone on their team -- the pickup driver, the local terminal, the destination terminal and the delivery driver," says Alan Murakami, transportation analyst with Mitsubishi Electronics American in Cypress, Calif.
To gather the information and select quality carriers, DISTRIBUTION magazine used a series of direct mail questionnaires and telephone interviews, each focusing on a specific mode of transportation. Survey participants were selected based on company size, industry, geographic location and known usage of that type of transportation. Interviews, tabulation and report preparation were done by Chilton Research Services, a division of Chilton Company and one of the largest business- to-business research companies in the United States.
Scores were based on responses from shippers who regularly use the carriers they rated. Carriers were rated on five performance categories: on-time performance, equipment and operations, value, customer service and sales staff. To receive Quest for Quality recognition, the transportation company had to excel in all five performance categories.
