Councillor Thomas O'Hanlon said previous bombs left on the Friary Road in Armagh city were claimed by dissidents and the community was "pointing the finger of blame in that direction". It is understood a member of the public spoke to a clergyman late on Wednesday to express his suspicions about the device and the police were contacted. A number of nearby homes had to be evacuated during the security alert. Army technical officers were sent to the scene and it is understood that at least one controlled explosion took place before the device was declared safe. It would have been controlled by a command wire and police believe that it was intended to send shrapnel across the immediate area, as security forces passed or were lured to the scene.
