Crews will collect up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of household toxics per vehicle - items such as antifreeze antifreeze, substance added to a solvent to lower its freezing point. The solution formed is called an antifreeze mixture. Antifreeze is typically added to water in the cooling system of an internal-combustion engine so that it may be cooled below the freezing point , car batteries, used motor oil, paint, pesticides, household batteries, fluorescent light bulbs and electronic waste such as TVs and monitors, computers, VCRs, stereos and cell phones at the free drop-off. Other waste that will be included paint thinner A paint thinner is a solvent used to thin oil-based paints, or as a cleaning agent.

Paint thinners include:
  • Acetone
  • Mineral spirits
  • Mineral turpentine (turps)
  • Wood turpentine
  • Naphtha
  • Toluene
  • Xylene

Since the first household hazardous waste roundup in 1988, more than 708,000 households have participated in the weekly roundups. Residents have dropped off more than 3.7 million gallons of paint, 875,000 gallons of used motor oil, 150 tons of dry-cell batteries, 61 tons of used oil filters and thousands of pounds of other miscellaneous household hazardous waste items. More than 80 percent of the household hazardous waste and 100 percent of the electronic waste collected by the program is recycled.

The Countywide Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Roundup Program is brought to you by the County of Los Angeles and presented by the Department of Public Works and the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County in cooperation with the City of Santa Clarita and the neighboring cities of Lancaster and Palmdale.
