DISNEYLAND GETS THE PARTY STARTED - EARLY.

Byline: - Jerry Rice

JUST LIKE the kid who can't wait for his birthday, Disneyland is starting its 50th anniversary party two months early, on May 5. It's a date - 05/05/05 - the Mad Hatter Mad Hatter

Several new shows will be unwrapped that day, including one next door at California Adventure. They are:

``Walt Disney's Parade of Dreams,'' a seven-float procession of iconic Disney characters. The parade will make four stops in the park where more than 100 performers will do their stuff.

``Disneyland - The First 50 Magical Years,'' an exhibit of attraction models, concept artwork, layouts and maps, including the original pencil drawing of the park Walt Disney used to persuade bankers to invest in his dream. A new film, hosted by Steve Martin and Donald Duck, is also part of the attraction, which temporarily replaces ``Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln is the name of an attraction that was originally showcased as the prime feature of the State of Illinois Pavilion at the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair. It was created by both Walt Disney and the Imagineers of WED Enterprises. .''

``Remember - Dreams Come True,'' a new 17-minute fireworks fireworks: see pyrotechnics.

``It's probably the most complicated, outrageous show we've done for nighttime,'' said Steve Davison, the creative director in charge of parades and spectaculars.

It opened on February 8, 2001. The park is owned and operated by The Walt Disney Company.  featuring popular characters from animated Pixar releases including Woody and Buzz from the ``Toy Story'' films, Mike and Sully from ``Monsters, Inc.'' and Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl and Frozone from ``The Incredibles.''

Already open in Tomorrowland:

Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, which has guests piloting their Star Cruiser vehicles through an interactive space mission where they collect points by shooting laser guns at targets. In June, a real-time Internet element will be added so prospective Space Rangers can play at home with those in the attraction.

And, on July 15:

Space Mountain (after a two-year makeover) will be relaunched using a new generation of special effects that weren't available when it debuted in 1977. Riders will board new rocket vehicles equipped with an enhanced audio soundtrack, speed along a reworked track, have a close encounter with a meteorite meteorite, meteor that survives the intense heat of atmospheric friction and reaches the earth's surface. Because of the destructive effects of this friction, only the very largest meteors become meteorites.  and, at the end of the ride, go through a longer re-entry RE-ENTRY, estates. ``Guests will find the classic elements they love, combined with new technology and special effects that make the experience even more of a 'wow,' '' said Disneyland Resort president Matt Ouimet.

Party plans are still in the works for Disneyland's actual 50th birthday, July 17.

With 50 years worth of memories, this looks to be a banner year.

James Zoltak, who covers the theme park industry for Amusement Business, estimates Disneyland could enjoy a bump in attendance at least in the high single digits percentage-wise this year. That would be on top of the 5 percent increase the park enjoyed in 2004, when 13.3 million visitors went through the front gates.

``There will definitely be a little sense of urgency among people who will want to visit at some point during the celebration,'' he said.
