DISNEY-PIXAR TO CREATE RELEASE FOR HOME VIDEO : NEW CHAPTER TO `TOY STORY'.

Byline: Dave McNary Daily News Staff Writer

will produce a made-for-video sequel to their 1995 blockbuster, ``Toy Story,'' the companies announced Monday.

Disney, which recently agreed to co-finance five movies with Pixar, has signed Tim Allen and Tom Hanks Noun 1. Tom Hanks - United States film actor (born in 1956)

their respective roles of Buzz Lightyear and Woody for the project.

Burbank-based Disney did not disclose when the yet-to-be-named sequel will hit store shelves or its price but it will probably wait until 1998. ``Toy Story'' carried a $26.99 price tag.

The agreement by high-profile stars such as Allen and Hanks to appear in the sequel reflects the growing strength of the market for movies made specifically for video release and never shown in theaters. Disney, the king of the home video market, entered the sector several years ago with the ``Aladdin'' sequel ``The Return of Jafar'' and then was able to persuade Robin Williams to work again as the voice of the genie genie: see jinni.

Disney saw ``Toy Story,'' the first full-length, computer-animated feature from a major studio, pull in a surprisingly strong domestic gross of more than $185 million. It then shipped more than 21 million cassettes for the home video market last fall.

Analyst Mike Yocco of Paul Kagan Associates of Carmel said Monday that the move by Disney and Pixar makes sense and predicted unit sales unit sales

of at least 5 million and possibly 6.5 million.

``Direct-to-video works for certain products,'' Yocco said. ``You have an audience that's ready, willing and able to pick it up almost immediately.''Disney already has a trio of made-for-video sequels due out later this year, starting with ``Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves'' on March 18, followed by ``Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin'' on Aug. 5 and ``Beauty and the Beast Beauty and the Beast is a traditional fairy tale (type 425C -- search for a lost husband -- in the Aarne-Thompson classification). The first published version of the fairy tale was a meandering rendition by Madame Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, published in : The Enchanted en·chant

It also is planning a live-action ``prequel'' to ``The Jungle Book'' called ``The Jungle Book: Mowgli's Story.''

``Made-for-video makes a lot of economic sense, since you cut out a lot of the costs that you would have for a wide-release movie, such as making prints and advertising,'' Yocco said. ``You can recoup your costs a lot more quickly.''

, Calif.-based Pixar went public in late 1995 shortly after the theatrical release of ``Toy Story'' and is currently working with Disney on another animated comedy called ``Bugs,'' due out next year. The company, headed by personal computer pioneer Steven Jobs, reportedly has been pushing for a ``Toy Story'' sequel for more than a year.

The overall home-video market has boomed in recent years due to the popularity of ``sell-through'' titles for purchase. However, analysts believe studios may be glutting the video market with more releases than consumers can handle. ``I am concerned about there being too many big-budget releases, just like there are in theaters,'' Yocco said.
